Victoria is at the southern tip of Vancouver Island and lies well south of the 49th Parallel, which marks the Canada-US border over much of the West. Victoria was the first port of embarkation when BC was a young British Colony, before colonists moved to the Mainland or inland. Once British and American industry demanded lumber and coal, both of which are found in great quantities n the Island, the city boomed.

Vancouver Island |
|
Victoria is the gateway to the rugged landscape of Victoria Island. Visitors can head north along Georgia Strait, which offers both great views and ferries to the Mainland. The northern tip is exposed to the hostile waters of the North Pacific, and leads to the Queen Charlottte Islands, home to the famed Haida first nations. The west coast of the Island, including Bamfield and Tofino offers quiet isolation alongside the open ocean.
