The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997, and its short form, "blog," was coined by Peter Merholz,
who jokingly split up the word "weblog" into the phrase "we blog" on his Peterme.com blog in 1999.
"Blog" was quickly adopted as both a noun and verb, where one posts to or edits their own weblog. This has evolved to the point there are linklog (with just links), photoblogs (with image postings) and even vlogs (video blogs).
Blogs typically focus on the thoughts and interests of an individual blogger, which may be politics, travel, community or profession.
There are even corporate blogs, often for marketing or PR purposes.
RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a Web-based newsreader-style way of keeping track of new content from your favorite sites. RSS is used by bloggers to include/post updates from other blogs, websites and sources. After downloading a special reader plug-in for your browser, you can view an accumulation of headlines and news summaries from many different websites, typically added to your reader as a "channel". Every headline and every channel, is linked back to the full article on the originating site.
